Boswellia serrata also improves blood supply to joints, thus restoring mobility.

1. Boswellia serrata (Salai Guggul / Salai):

Phytomedicine. 2003 Jan;10(1):3-7.

Efficacy and tolerability of Boswellia serrata extract in treatment of osteoarthritis of knee–a randomized double blind placebo controlled trial.

Kimmatkar N1, Thawani V, Hingorani L, Khiyani R.

Osteoarthritis is a common, chronic, progressive, skeletal, degenerative disorder, which commonly affects the knee joint. Boswellia serrata tree is commonly found in India. The therapeutic value of its gum (guggulu) has been known. It posses good anti-inflammatory, anti-arthritic and analgesic activity………..BSE is recommended in the patients of osteoarthritis of the knee with possible therapeutic use in other arthritis.

Indian Journal of Pharmacology 2014 Sep-Oct;46(5):475-9.

A randomized, double blind, placebo controlled, cross over study to evaluate the analgesic activity of Boswellia serrata in healthy volunteers using mechanical pain model.

Prabhavathi K1, Chandra US1, Soanker R1, Rani Pu1.

In the present study, Boswellia serrata significantly increased the Pain Threshold and Pain Tolerance force and time compared to placebo. Both study medications were well tolerated. Further multiple dose studies may be needed to establish the analgesic efficacy of the drug.

2. Commiphora mukul (Guggul or Mukul Myrrh) extract:

The Journal of Intercultural Ethnopharmacology 2014 Apr-Jun;3(2):56-62.

Analgesic, anti-inflammatory and anti-hyperlipidemic activities of Commiphora molmol extract (Myrrh).

Shalaby MA1, Hammouda Aa1.

The results denote that C. molmol extract (myrrh) has significant analgesic, anti-inflammatory and anti-hyperlipidemic effects and reduces body weight gain and improves blood lipids profile. These results affirm the traditional use of C. molmol for the treatment of pain, inflammations, and hyperlipidemia.

Alternative Therapies in Health and Medicine 2003 May-Jun;9(3):74-9.

The effectiveness of Commiphora mukul for osteoarthritis of the knee: an outcomes study.

Singh BB1, Mishra LC, Vinjamury SP, Aquilina N, Singh VJ, Shepard N.

Southern California University of Health Sciences, USA.

Ayurveda, the traditional system of healthcare in India, has many remedies for Osteoarthritis (OA). One of the ingredients most commonly found in Ayurvedic arthritis formulas is guggul, an oleoresin of the herb Commiphora mukul (CM). The authors have conducted both preclinical and clinical investigations of guggul for reduction of pain, stiffness, and improved function, and to determine tolerability in older patients with a diagnosis of OA of the knee.

Overall data indicate significant improvement for participants during the trial in both scales and objective measures used for assessment purposes. There were no side effects reported during the trial. CM appears to be a relatively safe and effective supplement to reduce symptoms of OA (osteoarthritis).

3. Nyctanthes arbortristis (Harshringar):

Inflammopharmacology. 2012 Aug;20(4):219-24.

Analgesic and anti-inflammatory activity of ß-sitosterol isolated from Nyctanthes arbortristis leaves.

Nirmal SA1, Pal SC, Mandal SC, Patil AN.

Results showed that ß-sitosterol (5, 10 and 20 mg/kg, i.p.) was responsible for the significant and dose-dependent activity comparable with the standard extract. ß-Sitosterol from N. arbortristis leaves might be responsible for analgesic and anti-inflammatory activity.

4. Cyperus rotundus (Nagarmotha):

Pak J Pharm Sci. 2014 Nov;27(6(Special)):2241-2246.

Assessment of anti-inflammatory, anti-ulcer and neuro-pharmacological activities of Cyperus rotundus Linn.

Ahmad M1, MahayRookh2, Rehman AB3, Muhammad N1, Amber3, Younus M4, Wazir A1

The crude extract showed mild decreased in all test and exhibited slight muscle relaxant effect. Powder drug studies and FTIR analysis were performed for the authentication of C. Rotundus.

5. Alpinia galanga (Rasna/ Kulanjan):

Phytochemistry. 2009 Jan;70(2):237-43.

The effects of p-hydroxycinnamaldehyde from Alpinia galanga extracts on human chondrocytes.

Phitak T1, Choocheep K, Pothacharoen P, Pompimon W, Premanode B, Kongtawelert P.

Osteoarthritis (OA) is the most common form of arthritis and affects millions of people worldwide. Patients have traditionally been treated with non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), but these are associated with significant side effects. Purification of the acetone extract of Alpinia galanga afforded p-hydroxycinnamaldehyde, …….. This study shows that p-hydroxycinnaldehyde from A. galanga Linn. is a potential therapeutic agent for treatment of OA.

6. Boerhavia diffusa (Punarnava):

Journal of Natural Products 2013 Aug 23;76(8):1393-8.

Rotenoids from Boerhaavia diffusa as potential anti-inflammatory agents.

Bairwa K1, Singh IN, Roy SK, Grover J, Srivastava A, Jachak SM.

Boeravinone B (6) exhibited significant anti-inflammatory activity (56.6% at 50 mg/kg) when evaluated in an in vivo carrageenan-induced rat paw model.

7. Ginger (Sonth):

Arthritis and Rheumatism 2001 Nov;44(11):2531-8.

Effects of a ginger extract on knee pain in patients with osteoarthritis.

Altman RD1, Marcussen KC.

Miami Veterans Affairs Medical Center and University of Miami, Florida, USA.

A highly purified and standardized ginger extract had a statistically significant effect on reducing symptoms of OA of the knee. This effect was moderate. There was a good safety profile, with mostly mild GI adverse events in the ginger extract group.

8. Trigonella foenum / Fenugreek (Methi) seed extract:

Acta Pol Pharm. 2008 Jul-Aug;65(4):473-6.

Analgesic and anti-inflammatory activities of Trigonella foenum-graecum (seed) extract.

Vyas S1, Agrawal RP, Solanki P, Trivedi P.

The results suggest that the water soluble fraction (MTH) of herbal origin has significant analgesic and anti-inflammatory potential as reflected by the parameters investigated. Further investigations are, however, necessary to explore mechanism(s) of action involved in these pharmacological activities.

9. Vitex Negundo (Nirgundi):

Journal of Ethnopharmacology 2003 Aug;87(2-3):199-206.

Anti-inflammatory and analgesic activities of mature fresh leaves of Vitex negundo.

Dharmasiri MG1, Jayakody JR, Galhena G, Liyanage SS, Ratnasooriya WD.

These observations revealed that the fresh leaves of Vitex negundo have anti-inflammatory and pain suppressing activities possibly mediated via PG synthesis inhibition, antihistamine, membrane stabilising and antioxidant activities. The antihistamine activity can produce the anti-itching effect claimed in Ayurveda medicine
